Um poema de George P. Morris (1802-1864)

Woodman, spare that tree!

Woodman, spare that tree!
Touch not a single bough!
In youth it sheltered me,
And I’’ll protect it now.
It was my forefather’s hand
That place it near his cot;
There, woodman, let it stand,
Thy axe shall harm it not!

That old familiar tree,
Whose glory and renown
Are spread over land and sea,
And wouldst thou hack it down?
Woodman, forbear thy stroke!
Cut not its earth-bound ties;
Oh, spare that aged oak,
Now towering to the skies!

When but and idle boy
I sought its greatful shade;
In all their gushing joy
Here too my sisters played.
My mother kissed me here;
My father pressed my hand, --
Forgive this foolish tear,
But let that old oak stand!

My hear-strings round thee cling,
Close as thy bark, old friend!
Here shall the wild-bird sing,
And still thy branches bend.
Old tree! The storm still brave!
And, woodman, leave the spot;
While I’ve hand to save,
Thy axe shall harm it not.

Lenhador, poupai aquela árvore!

Lenhador, poupai aquela árvore!
Não toqueis nem de leve um galho seu!
Pois ela, muito nova, sombra deu-me,
Por isso, agora, a protejo.
Pelas mãos foi de um meu antepassado
Que a plantou junto de sua casinha;
Ei, lenhador, deixai-a onde está,
Não, não há de feri-la vosso machado!

Aquela velha árvore amiga,
Cuja glória e fama
Por mares e terras se espalharam,
Como ousais, assim, a machado cortá-la?
Lenhador, poupai vosso golpe!
Das suas raízes da terra não a separeis;
Oh, daquele velho carvalho afastai vossas mãos
Que, agora, aos céus se abraçam!

No tempo em que não passava de uma menino indolente
A sombra acolhedora procurava-lhe;
Esfuziantes,
Aqui também brincavam minhas irmãs.
Lugar de beijos que mamãe me dava;

Lenhador, deste local afastai-vos;
Enquanto para vos salvar ainda mãos tiver,
Nunca há de atingi-la vosso machado.
