Diferentemente do que muitos pensam, Big Ben é o nome do sino da Torre do Palácio de Westminster, em Londres, e não o do relógio que também fica na torre. Claro que, com o tempo, o uso de “Big Ben” para se referir ao relógio e à torre passou a ser aceito.

O sino principal, com 13 toneladas, tem esse apelido por conta de uma homenagem feita a Sir Benjamin Hall, primeiro Barão de Llanover. Dizem que a primeira opção de nome seria Royal Victoria ou simplesmente Victoria, em homenagem à Rainha Vitória, mas o parlamento optou pela nomenclatura atual.

O relógio do Big Ben é o terceiro maior relógio de torre do mundo, e o maior com quatro lados. Este é o mais famoso relógio londrino, mas não o maior. O maior relógio de Londres é o Shell Mex House, em The Strand. Ele fica no prédio da companhia de petróleo Shell, finalizada em 1933, com uma torre de quase dez metros."
