The blind men and the elephant

It was six men of Indostan,
     To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the elephant, -
    Though all of them were blind, -
That each by observation
    Might satisfy his mind.

The first approached the elephant,
      And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
     At once began to bawl:
“Now bless me! But the elephant
    Is very like a wall!”

The second, feeling of the tusk,
    Cried: “Ho! What have we here,
So very round and smooth and sharp”
   To me it is mighty clear,
This wonder of an elephant
   Is very like a pear!”

The third approached the animal,
   And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
   Thus boldly up and spake:
“I see, “quoth he, the elephant
    Is very like a snake!”

The fourth reached out his eager hand,
   And felt about the knee:
“What most this wondrous beast is like
  It might plain,” quoth he;
“it is clear enough the elephant
  Is very like a tree”.

The fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
     Said: “Even the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most:
    Deny the fact who can,
This marvel of an elephant
    Is very like a fan!”

The sixth no sooner had begun
    About the beast to grope,
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
   That fell within his scope,
“I see,” quoth he, “the elephant
   Is very lie a rope!”

And so theses men of Indostan
   Disputed loud and long,
Each in is own opinion,
   Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
   And all were in the wrong!

Os cegos e o elefante

Do Indostão seis homens eram
     Ao conhecimento muito inclinados
Os quais o elefante ver foram, -
    Conquanto cada qual cego fosse,-
Bom observador cada um 
    Sua deficiência compensar podia.

Acercou-se o primeiro do elefante,
    Que, por acaso, veio cair
De encontro ao flanco largo e robusto
    A gritar de imediato principiou:
“Valha-me Deus! O elefante, porém,
    A um muro se compara!”

O segundo, sentindo-lhe a presa,
   Gritou: “Olá! O que temos aqui,
Tão redondo e liso e afiado?”
  Pra mim nada mais cristalino,
Esta maravilha de elefante
  Mais uma lança parece!”

O terceiro do animal se aproximou
   E, ocorrendo-lhe colocar
Nas suas mãos a tromba serpeante,
   Ousadamente assim bradou:
“Eu vejo,” disse, que o elefante
   Uma cobra lembra muito.”

O quarto a mão com avidez estendeu,
   Apalpando-o até ao joelho:
“Com o que este animal grandioso mais se parece
   Sem sombra de dúvida, disse ele;
“Nada mais evidente que o elefante
   Se iguala a uma árvore!”

O quinto, que, por sinal, lhe tocou a orelha,
   Afirmou: “Mesmo o mais cego dos cegos
Sabe dizer com o que mais se parece o elefante:
   Prove-me o contrário, se puder,
Esta maravilha de elefante
  É a cara de um abano !”

O sexto mal acabara
  De apalpar, aqui e ali, o quadrúpede,
Quando, agarrando-se à cauda ondulante,
  Ao seu alcance veio tê-la,
“Eu vejo,” disse, “ o elefante
  Tem de uma corda a aparência!”

Deste modo, estes homens do Indostão,
   Em voz alta e demorada discutiram,
Cada qual com a sua opinião,
   Excedendo-se em rigidez e veemência,
Posto cada um só em parte certo estava,
   Todos, no entanto, errados estavam.
