Germany 2008 For the Youth - Dinosaurs - Block issue

Just a note on the reprints. The reprints still have a date of 2009 on the stamp, but the logo on the margin is different.

Paleophilatelist, are you working to a timeframe?

Australia's megafauna is from the Pleistocene epoch. Its extinction most likely started after the arrival of Homo sapiens, about 46,000 years ago. It is only known from fossil records. I assume that would qualify?

The Thylacine is on the same set of stamps. It became believed extinct about 80 years ago and is known from recorded history. I assume that is not included.

Megafauna in other places became extinct as recent as 250 years ago (Moa in New Zealand). In or out?

Where is your dividing line between paleo and recently extinct?

the boarder between paleontology and cryptozoology is not always clear to me.
I would say (but may be I'm wrong), what ever animal is known to modern human from fossils only are belong to paleontology. The animals are killed by "modern man" are belongs to cryptozoology.
Now is the question how to define "modern man" ?  
Homo sapience was hunting on mammoth for example, but everybody agrees mammoth are belong to paleontology

Cryptozoology is usually connected with such creatures as yeti, bigfoot, unicorn, pegasus.

But using the broader definition of "Hidden Creatures" there will be overlap with paleontology:


Cryptids are found on stamps and would be an interesting thematic area.

I will check if the miniature sheet with the old imprint is still available, however I can make no promises as although it is supposed to be definitive, neither the miniature sheets nor some of the stamps are available at the PO (since the rates rose to €0.20 (local) and €0.69 (local registered)last June, the €0.19 and €0.68 values are useless, and the lowest value readily available is €0.37).

Here is one set depicting fossils issued in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Federal postal authority, year 2001.22.03, FV about 1.5 Eur, issued in MS of 20 (10 of each) representing trias period snails fossils. Hope you like it!

Only other info I could provide on mentioned set is issued quantity of 50.000 sets, as mentioned issued in 20 pieces MS containing 10 of each or 5000 MS printed. Printer was famous Swiss company Courvoisier and they printed lot of stamps of ex-Yugoslavia and some other Bosnian stamps too.

Well I'm not geologist or paleontologist but as far as I know there has been no discovery of dinosaur fossils in Bosnia and Herzegovina except recent discovery of something that they suspect to be footprints of some kind of small dinosaur.

This exactly what I found in Google. Do you know any reason why dinosaurs stamps are printed ?

Germany 2011, "150 years of discovery prehistoric bird Archaeopteryx"



In 2011 the discovery of an eleventh specimen was announced. It is said to be one of the more complete specimens, but is missing the skull and one forelimb. It is privately owned and has yet to be given a name or described scientifically.


The owner kindly agreed to have it included in the list of German National Cultural Heritage and gave it on loan to the Bayerische Staatssammlung für Paläontologie und Geologie for scientific study. The specimen was on exhibit during the Mineralientage Munich from October 28 to 30 2011

Lebanese Amber:

The amber found in Lebanon is very old, perhaps the oldest, dating back to the Cretaceous period or some 100 million years old. it may hold insight into environments of the past with the study of the inclusions of flora and fauna trapped inside the amber. The organisms found in Lebanese amber date back to the Cretaceous period; a time when flowering plants and insects were co-evolving . Biting insects found in Lebanese amber might even contain dinosaur DNA! (I don't know if you have watched Jurassic Park before, they used this story in their film!). 
Scott number for this stamp is 570 (year 2002) cat value 10.5$

The Cretaceous sublithographic limestone deposits of Lebanon is a rich Lagerstatten with an amazing diversity of fauna. 
The sublithographic limestone deposits of Lebanon are dated to the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous, some 93 to 97 million years ago, and are most famous for exquisitely fossil fish preservation, but also produces a diversity of other well preserved invertebrate fossils such as shrimp and lobsters.
