Anybody collect Paleontology related stamps: paleontologists, fossils, prehistoric animals, dinosaurs, early man, museums ?
Let's share some stamps there ! (Cinderellas, illegal or commercial items are NOT welcome).

Hi all !

Some time is very tricky to identify Paleontologist or Paleontology contributor on stamp.
(Cinderela, illegal or commercial stamps are NOT welcome).
I have a list of all known to me Paleontologists: http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/stamps_paleontologist.html
Lit of Paleontology contributors: http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/stamps_paleontology_fellow.html

Will be really appreciate for a help to complete these lists.

I am not a paleophilatelist, I am a macropodidaephilatelist. :D

Some of Australia's megafauna provides a small area of overlap.

Hi aethelwulf

I prefer to keep it in separate threads, if possible.
Depends on user activity "Paleontology on stamps" can grow much faster as the "Paleontologist on stamps"
I like to have a help of the community to identify more Paleontologists on stamps, as it's not always easy.
If you keep it merged my request for help to identify Paleontologists might be overseen

Can you split these threads back, please ?

Hi muruk !

Do you have description of the set ? I'm not sure if these stamps are related to paleontology or cryptozoology.

The mini sheet is on my first post on this thread.

Our Megafauna is recent paleontology, NOT cryptozoology.

I will try to get the specifications, but not tonight.

We also have some dinosaur stamps, but I didn't collect those. I will see if I can get enough information to add for you.

Hi muruk,

I'm aware about another stamps depicted dinosaurs:
1993 - http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/images/sets/Australia_1993.jpg
1997 - http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/images/sets/Australia_1997.jpg

Prehistoric animals
2005 - http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/images/sets/Australia_2005.jpg

Fossil found site:
1996 - http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/images/sets/australia_1996.jpg

but there no doubt about their relation to Paleontology topic.

Great ! Thanks !

I was aware about the stamp, by the way it was reprinted in 2011, but I didn't knew Malta Post has Philatelic Bureau website.
I'm going to add a page about this stamp on my web site soon. So far I have more than 110 described stamps there:http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/description/stamps/index.html

Just a note on the reprints. The reprints still have a date of 2009 on the stamp, but the logo on the margin is different.

Just for interest, these reprints of the 2009 definitive values were made until now (all with the new logo):
€0.01 - 19 October 2011
€0.19 - 14 May 2011
€0.37 - 19 October 2011
miniture sheet - 23 May 2011

The €0.01 and miniature sheet reprints:

It is available from the MaltaPost website:
http://www.maltaphilately.com/en/Products/Product/PMS0909?returnURL=%2Fen%2FIssues%2FIssue%2FI09019%3FreturnURL%3D%252Fen%252FIssues%252FAll%252FPage2%253Fmode%253DGrid

However if you want the original one (blue & yellow logo) it is quite difficult as even in Malta they are unavailable.

Paleophilatelist, are you working to a timeframe?

Australia's megafauna is from the Pleistocene epoch. Its extinction most likely started after the arrival of Homo sapiens, about 46,000 years ago. It is only known from fossil records. I assume that would qualify?

The Thylacine is on the same set of stamps. It became believed extinct about 80 years ago and is known from recorded history. I assume that is not included.

Megafauna in other places became extinct as recent as 250 years ago (Moa in New Zealand). In or out?

Where is your dividing line between paleo and recently extinct?

Hi muruk,

the boarder between paleontology and cryptozoology is not always clear to me.
I would say (but may be I'm wrong), what ever animal is known to modern human from fossils only are belong to paleontology. The animals are killed by "modern man" are belongs to cryptozoology.
Now is the question how to define "modern man" ?
Homo sapience was hunting on mammoth for example, but everybody agrees mammoth are belong to paleontology

Hi HalfpennyYellow,

I like to have both variations. In addition I need MS of the elefant only in both variations.
Can you get the "old" one , which is not on sale by Malta Post anymore ?
Any wish of German stamp ? If so me may exchange some.

Cryptozoology is usually connected with such creatures as yeti, bigfoot, unicorn, pegasus.

But using the broader definition of "Hidden Creatures" there will be overlap with paleontology:

Quote:
Cryptozoology refers to the search for animals whose existence has not been proven. This includes looking for living examples of animals that are considered extinct, such as dinosaurs; animals whose existence lacks physical evidence but which appear in myths, legends, or are reported, such as Bigfoot and Chupacabra and wild animals dramatically outside their normal geographic ranges, such as phantom cats.

Cryptids are found on stamps and would be an interesting thematic area.

Hello paleophilatelist

I will check if the miniature sheet with the old imprint is still available, however I can make no promises as although it is supposed to be definitive, neither the miniature sheets nor some of the stamps are available at the PO (since the rates rose to €0.20 (local) and €0.69 (local registered)last June, the €0.19 and €0.68 values are useless, and the lowest value readily available is €0.37).

I read the page on your website, and it is very good. :D About your missing information:
Author: Edward Pirotta and Paul Psaila
Layout: You might include that the sheet was of 10 stamps
Paper: Maltese Cross watermarked
Print Technique: Offset
Quantity:
€0.01 - 1,600,000 (160,000 sheets)
    29.12.09 - 400,000 stamps (40,000 sheets)
    19.10.11 - 1,600,000 stamps (160,000 sheets)

miniature sheet - 11,500
    29.12.09 - 7500 sheets
    23.05.11 - 4000 sheets

You might include info on the reprints (you can use my images as well if you wish) in the 'Variations' section.

Just for your information, Malta never issued any other stamps related to paleontology. However the Scenery set of 16 September 2009 featured Reqqa Point (on the €0.02) and Xwejni Bay (on the €0.37), which are both good fossil sites on Malta's sister island of Gozo.

Separate thanks for a hint about the Scenery set. I'll look on it and probably add to my stamp list.

No, I'm still looking.

We have a visual catalogue of all Australian stamps right here: http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=8394

It's in bulletin board thread format, so difficult to navigate to a specific stamp ... you need to guess what page it might be on.

Only other info I could provide on mentioned set is issued quantity of 50.000 sets, as mentioned issued in 20 pieces MS containing 10 of each or 5000 MS printed. Printer was famous Swiss company Courvoisier and they printed lot of stamps of ex-Yugoslavia and some other Bosnian stamps too.

This one is known to me: http://www.paleophilatelie.eu/descripti ... _1999.html

Do you know the motivation to print some dinosaurs on stamps by Bosnia and Herzegovina post authority ? As far I know there no single fossil of dinosaur is found so far. Am I wrong ?

Well I'm not geologist or paleontologist but as far as I know there has been no discovery of dinosaur fossils in Bosnia and Herzegovina except recent discovery of something that they suspect to be footprints of some kind of small dinosaur.

Germany 2011, "150 years of discovery prehistoric bird Archaeopteryx"
Image

In 2011 the discovery of an eleventh specimen was announced. It is said to be one of the more complete specimens, but is missing the skull and one forelimb. It is privately owned and has yet to be given a name or described scientifically.
Image

The owner kindly agreed to have it included in the list of German National Cultural Heritage and gave it on loan to the Bayerische Staatssammlung für Paläontologie und Geologie for scientific study. The specimen was on exhibit during the Mineralientage Munich from October 28 to 30 2011

Lebanese Amber:

The amber found in Lebanon is very old, perhaps the oldest, dating back to the Cretaceous period or some 100 million years old. it may hold insight into environments of the past with the study of the inclusions of flora and fauna trapped inside the amber. The organisms found in Lebanese amber date back to the Cretaceous period; a time when flowering plants and insects were co-evolving . Biting insects found in Lebanese amber might even contain dinosaur DNA! (I don't know if you have watched Jurassic Park before, they used this story in their film!).
Scott number for this stamp is 570 (year 2002) cat value 10.5$

Lebanese Fossils
The Cretaceous sublithographic limestone deposits of Lebanon is a rich Lagerstatten with an amazing diversity of fauna.
The sublithographic limestone deposits of Lebanon are dated to the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous, some 93 to 97 million years ago, and are most famous for exquisitely fossil fish preservation, but also produces a diversity of other well preserved invertebrate fossils such as shrimp and lobsters.

Scott number of this stamp is 571 (2002) cat value 21$
